The Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), under Professor Michael Silbermann’s leadership, brings together clinicians, academicians and government representatives throughout the Middle East with the goal of advancing cancer and palliative care, thereby turning the map of war-torn places into faces and individuals. Human-to-human relationships are established and bonds are formed as health professionals face an even greater battle than the Middle East conflict – the devastation of untreated cancer and its accompanying pain and suffering. It is through this humanitarian pursuit to overcome the cancer enemy that conflicted borders between countries are torn down and prejudices about religion disappear.

MECC provides ongoing training in the Middle East, convening regional leaders on an annual basis while enhancing capacity building by adding new professionals to the initiative. In the process, these relationships strengthen, and a family comes into being - the MECC family.
